November 26 is observed as National Milk Day in India in honor of “Father of White Revolution” Dr.Varghese Kurien.
Dr.Varghese Kurien, an Indian social entrepreneur, fondly called “The Milkman of India” dedicated his life for a cooperative movement called Operation Flood, to boost the production of milk in India. This successful agricultural development programme transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer in 1998.
Institutions of excellence like AMUL, GCMMF, IRMA, NDDB were founded by Dr. Kurien which are owned, managed by farmers and run by professionals. He was the founding chairman of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), and was responsible for the creation and success of the Amul brand of dairy products. He is regarded as one of the greatest proponents of this cooperative movement in the world, having lifted millions of Indian out of poverty.
All the dairy majors of India have joined hands to celebrate 26th November, birth anniversary of Dr. Kurien as National Milk Day in his honour.
